Work I Enjoyed in Class

This is a picture of the studio. People were beginning to put up their work.

Orla is working on a stencil here. She cut out sencils of different sized bottles and used the stencils to create a wave of bettles on paper.

Here is her first attenp at creating a wave effect from her stencil.

Orla’s final display clearly showed how she had worked from images of surfers. Her idea was clever and the stencil design could be a great way to get students creating interesting work in the classroom.

This is Orla’s final piece. The text was cut out on the pink (like a stencil) and then just stuck on. It works well against the blue background. Her message is clear ‘Wipe Out Waste’.

I thought Caroline had a clever idea with her graphics project. She was aiming to make people more aware of garments that have been made in sweat shops.

Here we can see Caroline cutting out a stencil for her figure of the woman.

Caroline’s final piece is the work in the top left hand corner. She used a lightbox to re-arrange pieces of coloured paper to create the image of the woman.

This is Caroline working on the lightbox.

Caroline’s final piece, below, has a high quality finish. I like the way she collaged the figure and the font for the lettering seems to fit well with her message.

My Own Investigation

I began by cutting out bookmark-sized pieces of card and mono printing onto them to get a background texture.
I used different coloured card to see what effects I could get.
I then started experimenting with text, using mono print. I was thinking along the lines of using a series of bookmarks to communicate a message.

I then manipulated these mono prints in photoshop to get a clearer image. The results are shown below.

I decided that using a sequence to express a message with bookmarks may not be the most effective solution as one person may have ‘love’ and another ‘colour’ etc. I then began to explore the idea of having just one slogan on a bookmark. I mono used my mono printed cards with the texture backgrounds and added text in photoshop. The ARI stands for Anti Racism Ireland.

I was trying to get across the idea of racism being smaller, and so implying that there was ‘no room’ for it.
I inverted the image to see what the effect would be like.

I then started thinking about another slogan, the idea of racism being negative and perhaps using an image of a negative along with that.

I found this to be working well and introduced an image of a negative and it’s reel. I manipulated the text to gradually increase in size to fit the image.

I decided to invert the whole image to emphasize the idea of racism being ‘negative’. I feel this worked out quite well.
